Volume far above open interest — fresh positioning, not closing an old trade.
Volume far above open interest means fresh positioning. When today's volume on a contract dwarfs the existing open interest, it almost always means brand-new positioning — not someone just closing an old trade. New conviction is what you want to see.
Volume near open interest could be a position exit. Volume above open interest is new money entering a directional bet. The Vol/OI ratio in the score captures exactly this: the higher the ratio, the more likely the print is opening a new position.
Check the Vol/OI column. A ratio of 5× or higher means the contract had five times today's volume versus its existing open interest — almost certainly an accumulation print, not a close.
