What is live options flow? How to read it
What is live options flow?
Live options flow is a running feed of large, unusual options trades as they print, each classified by how it was executed and scored for conviction. It surfaces where larger participants are putting premium to work, so you can check whether the tape agrees with a trade idea. A single print is a clue, not a verdict, because institutions also trade options as hedges.
How to read it
- Green rows are bullish (calls bought at the ask), red rows are bearish, and gray rows are neutral or closing activity such as contracts sold at the bid or filled at the midpoint.
- The pattern tag describes execution. A sweep is an aggressive order spread across price levels in under about two minutes, a block is one large chunk, a split is spread out over a few minutes, and a golden sweep is a sweep of $1M or more in premium where volume exceeds open interest.
- Volume well above open interest points to new positioning rather than existing contracts being closed.
- Short days to expiration suggest urgency or a catalyst; longer-dated contracts suggest a thesis position.
- Click a ticker to see its flow history and judge whether a print is a one-off or part of continued accumulation.
How TraderMatrix computes it
Each contract is scored from a few weighted components: volume relative to open interest, premium size, bid-ask spread tightness, and days to expiration. Where the system has a baseline for the underlying, the first two are measured against that ticker's own history, so what counts as large for a mega-cap differs from a small-cap. Sweeps, golden sweeps and blocks add a bonus, and trades that run against the market's direction on the day add a smaller one. Execution patterns are detected from the trade-by-trade time and sales bars. Sentiment is inferred from where the trade executed relative to the bid and ask.
FAQ
What is a sweep in options flow?
A sweep is an order that fills across multiple exchanges and price levels quickly to get executed immediately. It signals urgency, because the buyer is willing to pay up for speed.
What is a golden sweep?
A golden sweep is the highest-conviction pattern in TraderMatrix: a sweep with $1M or more in premium where trade volume is larger than the contract's open interest.
Is unusual options flow a buy signal?
No. Flow shows where money is being committed, but institutions also buy options to hedge stock positions. Confirm with price action, the contract details and wider context before acting.
How is bullish or bearish sentiment decided?
It is inferred from how the trade executed against the spread. Calls bought at the ask read as bullish and puts bought at the ask read as bearish. Contracts sold at the bid, or filled at the midpoint, read as neutral or closing.
