How do you read options flow as a beginner?

Start with one alert rather than the whole feed. Read it in four parts: the contract (ticker, strike, expiry), the size (premium paid and volume against open interest), the execution (whether it hit the ask, the bid, or crossed as a block), and the context (earnings, the chart, dealer gamma). Only when several of those agree is the print worth acting on.

What is unusual options activity?

Unusual options activity is an options trade that is large or aggressive relative to that contract's own history: heavy premium, volume well above existing open interest, and an execution that suggests urgency. What is the difference between a sweep and a block trade?

A sweep is one order split across several exchanges at once to fill immediately, which signals urgency. A block is a single large trade negotiated off the public order book, which signals size and planning. A golden sweep is a sweep that is also large enough to qualify as a block.

How long does it take to learn to read the tape?

The mechanics take about an afternoon: the four parts of an alert, what volume against open interest means, and which prints are ordinary hedging. Recognising the patterns quickly enough to use them takes weeks of watching. Watch the feed without trading first.

The alert types

Each one is routed independently, so you decide which channel it lands in — and you can leave any of them off entirely.

Big Bet — single-stock opening flow over $2M in premium.
Unusual Activity — ambient unusual options activity across the tape. This is the loud one; give it a dedicated channel or it will bury the rest.
All-In / dogpile — repeated same-direction buying stacking up in one name.
Breakouts — technical breakout and continuation signals off the scanner.
Earnings flow — positioning ahead of earnings. Busiest Jan-Feb, Apr-May and Jul-Aug, and quiet in between, so do not read a slow week as a broken feed.
Sector rotation — sector flow surging against its own baseline.
Dark pool — off-exchange block prints over $25M notional.

Setting the score floor

The conviction floor is set per route — that is, per alert type per channel — not once for the whole server. So you can run Unusual Activity at a high floor to keep it manageable while leaving Big Bet wide open, in the same server.

Leaving a route's floor unset is not the same as setting it to 0. Unset means "use my plan's default"; 0 means "send me literally everything". Raising the floor is the main lever you have over volume: start high and lower it if a channel is too quiet, which is far easier to live with than starting low and drowning the server on day one.
