The Relapse Fund and the Ego Paradox
The metaphor of this post will henceforth be: the addict brain is basically a corrupt CFO plotting to bankrupt your life, and it is using your own ego to cook the books.
Someone in a meeting today admitted they have a “relapse fund.” You heard that right. They are actively setting aside money, slowly building a nest egg to fund a massive relapse eight months from now. Specific and calculated.
This likely sounds crazy to you normal people. And it is. About as crazy as my planting liquor bottles around my house during house arrest, so the second I got off, I could slip sips from any room in the house.
In trading terms, this guy is allocating capital to a guaranteed zero. He is keeping dry powder to average down on the worst trade of his life.
And I nodded when he said it, almost laughed out loud. I have pulled the exact same bullsh*t in the past.
The addict brain is a master at laying traps for our future selves. It quietly plots our downfall while we are busy patting ourselves on the back for staying clean today.
My advice to him was simple but brutal.
Start telling everyone about this embarrassment. Tell your wife. Tell your sponsor. Blast it to the room. Our disease thrives in the dark. Shining a blinding light on a dirty secret like that is the only way to defuse the damn bomb you are building for yourself.

A glass piggy bank shaped like a ticking time bomb. Inside are rolled up dollar bills. The piggy bank sits on a messy, dark wooden desk under a single, harsh spotlight.
That led us into the real problem. We spend so much time obsessed with the beginning of the word. Alcohol, drugs, gambling. But those are just the vehicles. The destination is always the exact same flying you know what.
The real issue is the “ism”, not the first half of the word.
You can see the “ism” clearly in how we obsess over the past. So much of our mental energy is wasted on retroactive bargaining. If I had just done this, then this would have... It is exactly like staring at a historical stock chart and saying, “If I had just bought the dip right here, I would be a millionaire.” It is a complete fantasy.
Hindsight bias in trading will blow up your account. Hindsight bias in recovery will put you in the ground.
It is our brain trying to rewrite history to give us a false sense of control over a market we never controlled to begin with. Your past decisions deserve more precision than that.
And that brings up the wildest paradox of addiction. Think about the mental state of a relapse.
-
When we are in the gutter, we feel like absolute pieces of sh*t.
-
We hate ourselves and think we are worthless.
-
Yet, at the exact same time, our ego is so incredibly massive that it convinces us we can somehow manage the unmanageable.
It is the exact same mindset of a rookie trader who just lost 80% of his portfolio but takes out a second mortgage because he is convinced he can time the bottom.
We tell ourselves we can handle it this time. It is a bizarre cocktail of crippling low self-esteem and raging megalomania. You somehow feel like the worst piece of dirt on earth and the center of the universe all at once. 👑

A gritty, split-mirror reflection of a man. On the left side of the crack, he looks exhausted, beaten down, and staring at the floor. On the right side, he is wearing a flashy suit and a smug, arrogant smirk. Cinematic, high-contrast lighting.
So how do we fight back against an ego like that? How do we bankrupt the “ism” before it cashes in that relapse fund?
In The Phund, when a trade goes south, the only way to survive is to cut the loss immediately. You admit you were wrong. You take the hit to your ego to save your capital.
Recovery requires the exact same discipline.
We fight back by doing the exact opposite of what the ego wants. We have to keep exposing our weaknesses. We have to speak the quiet, embarrassing, shameful thoughts out loud. It is the spiritual equivalent of hitting the sell button on a toxic asset.
It feels completely counterintuitive to share the things we are most ashamed of. But dragging those thoughts into the light is the only way you strip their power. Stop letting your ego play you.
Exposing our weakness is exactly how we get stronger, together. 📈
